Should I lease it or buy it?

Leasing in plain English: you pay for the slice of the car you use…

If you work the phones or the floor, you heard that question this week. And most of us answer it with opinions instead of math.

Here’s the plain-English version.

When a customer finances, they buy the whole car. They borrow the full price, pay it all back plus interest, and at the end the title is theirs. Every payment buys a piece of metal they keep.

When a customer leases, the bank buys the car and makes a bet on what it will still be worth at the end. That number is called the residual, and it’s locked in on day one. The customer only pays for the slice of value the car uses up while they drive it, plus rent on the bank’s money. At the end they hand back the keys — or buy out the bank’s slice at the number that was promised from the start.

That one idea explains why the same $32,500 car can run about $571 a month to finance and about $477 a month to lease. The lease payment isn’t magic, and it isn’t a trick. It just doesn’t have to cover the whole car.

I built an interactive board that shows all of it live. Type in a real customer — what they’re driving, what they pay now, what they’re budgeting — and watch the deal build itself. A few things it will show you:

The selling price is negotiable on a lease too — on a lease it’s called the cap cost, and every dollar off it comes straight out of the payment. The “money factor” is just interest wearing a costume — multiply it by 2400 and you get the real rate. On a lease, tax only hits the payments, not the whole car. A big down payment on a lease is risky money. And at lease end there are three doors: hand back the keys, buy it at the residual, or cash in the equity if the car is worth more than the bet.

Tap the board below, plug in a deal you took this week, and run it both ways. The customer who asks “lease or buy?” isn’t looking for a lecture. They’re looking for someone who can show them the money. Be that person.
